  About the Author

  Prologue

Victor had always been extremely patient. He had endured the harshest insults and treatment, with a smirk on his face that betrayed nothing. He knew why he was there: what he had been born to do. As he held the autopsy report in his stiff fingers, he knew everything he had been through had finally paid off.

The name on the autopsy report was of the one that he loathed: Samuel Sanford. With all the hate in Victor's heart, he hadn't expected this to happen so soon.

A plan had been in place to remove Samuel from power. A methodically crafted plan that Victor had conceived on his own. There he sat in his living room, with the keys to the kingdom in his hands, and he had barely even lifted a finger.

Samuel Sanford, a man whose name meant nothing to the world, but struck fear in the hearts of every person in the underground, deserved nothing he ever acquired, and Victor couldn't stop himself from laughing at the irony of things. He believed that Samuel deserved this sort of demise.

The explosion that had happened, was in no way just a coincidence. Yet, the firefighter had said it was just a gas leak—those in the underground knew something else was up.

The power dynamics had shifted in an instant. Some of Samuel's men had gone over to his greatest rival: Amelia.

The few that were still loyal, stayed with Victor. The person who would've rightfully taken over was Samuel’s longtime ally and loyal dog, Smithy, but he had perished with Samuel in the explosion.

Now Victor was in charge, and he wasn't going to stand for a divided kingdom. He resolved to get his men back, even if he had to dine with the devil to do it.

“Bastard—he left as quickly as he came,” Victor mused. He placed the piece of paper on the table in front of him. Letting out a deep sigh, he reclined back on his sofa.

His frustration started to build up; this wasn't the plan. He had a plan to get rid of Samuel, but this had just been a stroke of luck. Victor didn't like luck, he couldn't trust it, and more importantly, he couldn't control it.

It didn't change the fact that he was now the head of the racket, and he had to prove himself to stay in power. But Victor was a smart man; he already had a plan for that, and it didn't involve luck.

Victor closed his eyes, as he tried to remember something he had forgotten.

“Shit! Tyson!” His eyes shot open, and he reached for his phone. He saw that there were already a few texts from the man in question.

“What am I going to do with you?” he asked his phone, almost like it would respond automatically.

Now that Samuel was dead, Victor didn't have to be around Tyson any longer. But he knew Tyson had already fallen for him and would be hard to get rid of.

Victor reached for his phone and quickly sent a text to Tyson, “I'll meet up with you soon babe; make sure you're alone.” He tossed the phone back on the table.

Almost immediately it rang, causing Victor to groan in annoyance, as he expected Tyson to be the one calling. He peered at the phone and saw a different caller ID. A name popped up that brought a wicked grin to his face.

  “So it begins.”

  Part I

  Chapter 1

  Migraine

Brad was not a bad person. He wasn't as soft as his fiancé, Michael, but he still had a conscience. It was that conscience that pricked at him relentlessly, as he ambled back into the living room of his apartment.

As he sat on his couch, Brad pressed the sides of his temple to try and ease the headache that was already rearing its head.

“Why did this have to happen?” he wondered.

He had done nothing but help his sister-in-law with a favor. It had been a simple request; let a young man stay with you for a while, as he tried to find his father. How had that gone so wrong?

The headache eventually came, and Brad wondered if he should call Michael to get him something for it from work. It was one of the perks of having a doctor as a lover.

Brad shook the thought out of his head. It was a bad idea: the headache only increased. He refused to go to the bathroom cabinet to get some aspirin because he assumed Drew would still be lying there, drunk, naked and passed out on the floor.

The amount of information Brad had discovered in the past few minutes was too much. The biggest problem was that he still didn't know which part was true and what was a lie. He could just assume that what he had heard were the ramblings of a drunk man, but he still couldn't shake this feeling that there was some truth in Drew's words.

  It dawned on Brad tha
t he was waiting. Waiting for answers. He needed to talk to his brother, to confront him about everything Drew had said. How could he not know his brother was gay? If it was the truth, then his brother hid it well.

As much as he wanted to talk to Hank and hear that all that had been said were lies, the chance that they were true worried him. If Drew was right, then Hank had cheated on his wife, and had probably come all this way, not to see Brad, but to cheat again.

  “This is so messed up.”

One thing was certain to Brad: Drew couldn't stay with him any longer.

It wasn't that he blamed Drew for anything that had happened, but there was so much bad energy around the young lad. If all this really was true, then Drew wasn't at fault, that honor would go to Hank.

That didn't mean Drew was completely off the hook though. He had to go—too many bad things had happened around him—first his father had disappeared, and he was desperately trying to find him. Next was Drew's friend, Tyson who had also disappeared mysteriously, only to surface again, with no memories of what had happened to him.

Brad couldn't help but fear that that wasn't the end of it, and that there was a lot he didn't know.

  “I wish Michael was here.”

Brad knew how nice it would feel to have his lover's arms around him, instead of dealing with these new problems by himself. In that moment, he decided to talk to Michael before he confronted either Hank or Drew.

His prayers were answered when the door to his apartment opened, and Michael walked in, with a smile on his face.

Michael's smile quickly gave way to a confused frown when he saw the expression on Brad's face.

  “What's wrong?”

The response he got was an exaggerated sigh.

“Things couldn't be more messed up,” Brad responded.

  Chapter 2

  Banter

  “How can you say that?”

Florence's question was met with a roll of the eyes from Tyson.

“No way, Mister, you are coming out with me tonight.”

“You have a date!” Tyson protested.

  “Yeah, and so?”

Tyson gave her a baffled look. Florence was one of his closest friends, yet she found a new way to surprise him, almost every day.

Today, her strange behavior was that she had asked Tyson to come along with her on her date. Tyson didn't have the energy she had.

“You are so weird,” Tyson sighed.

“Nuh-uh,” Florence pouted. Her expression made Tyson laugh, an actual, full, healthy laugh. As he did this, he realized that he hadn't really laughed for a while.

  “Are you five years old?”

“You're the child!” Florence protested. “What kind of best friend are you, if you can't accompany me on my date?”

  “It means I'm sane.”

“What if he's a serial killer?”

“He works in accounting!” Tyson cried. “And you asked him out, remember?”

“I know, I know,” Florence replied, as she folded her arms. “You don't have to bring up such specifics.”

Tyson peeked at his phone briefly, to see if there were any new messages.

“You're waiting for someone, aren't you?” Florence pointed at Tyson accusingly. She wore the widest grin he had ever seen.

  “What? No!”

It was no use: Florence saw right through him.

“I'm going to have to meet this guy one day,” she declared. “You can't hide him forever.”

“I'm not hiding him. It's just that we're not exactly official, and I don't want to scare him away.”

Florence moved to the couch and plopped down beside her best friend.

“I bet he's cute, huh?” she asked. “With a very nice body and beautiful muscles. And most importantly, a long hard di—”

“Okay, you can stop now,” Tyson interrupted. He stood up from the chair and moved to a different one, but Florence followed him.

“Come on, can't you tell me anything? I really want to meet this guy.”

  “He's a private person.”

“So mysterious and unavailable, seems like what you'd fall for.”

  “What do you mean?”

Florence gave an innocent look, in response to Tyson's question.

Her not-so-subtle hint quickly dawned on Tyson. “You're talking about Drew again, aren't you?”

“Well, you haven't told me what happened between you two,” she defended. “Besides, I know you still like him; I just don't know why you're avoiding him.”

“Please, let's drop this—you're going to be late for your dinner.”

“Fine, sulk here, while you wait for your mystery man to text you. I'm going to have some fun with my guy. By the time this night is over, that man's neighbors are going to be filing a noise complaint.”

Tyson laughed; he didn't doubt her words at all.

“Sure, just try not to hit on anyone else on your date.”

“Nobody said anything about that; what if the waiter is really cute or something.”

“Keep it in your pants, lady!”

“No promises,” Florence replied, as she walked out the door. Tyson eased into his couch and pulled out his phone again. This time there was a new text from Victor.

The message was short and precise; all Victor's texts were. It told him that Victor was on his way.

Tyson looked around his apartment and wondered if his boyfriend would like it.

  Chapter 3

  Signs of Discord

“What is that smell? Have you been drinking, Brad?”

Brad shook his head in response, as Michael sat beside him. The headache he'd felt earlier seemed to ease up, perhaps it was just because of too much contemplation.

  “What is it, then?”

“It's Drew,” Brad replied. “He's passed out on the bathroom floor.”

  “Oh God! Is he okay?”

“He's just drunk: he's okay though.”

Brad knew that he was lying to Michael—he didn't truly know if Drew was okay or not, but that wasn't the point. He needed advice, or at least validation for how he felt.

  “I'm . . . I'm kicking him out of the house.”

  “Okay.”

Brad couldn't hide his shock from the simple reply. “You're not going to ask why?”

“I trust your decisions, Brad. He probably deserves it.”

  “No, it's not that.”

  “You're confusing me, Brad.”

Brad sighed. Michael put down the bag he'd been holding and walked behind Brad's chair. He slid both arms around Brad and kissed his cheek and then his neck. He slipped a hand down into Brad's shirt.

“As much as I'd love that, babe,” Brad started. He removed Michael's hands from his chest. “I need to talk to you about this.”

“Okay, fine,” Michael pouted. He walked back and sat with his lover. “What did Drew do?”

“It wasn't much what he did: it was what he said.”

  “Which was?”

  “He said I was gay.”

“I would hope so,” Michael laughed. “Otherwise, I don't know what it is we've been doing all this time.”

  “He thought I was Hank.”

  “Hank isn't gay.”

Brad, uncharacteristically threw his hands in the air. “That's exactly what I said. I told him that Hank wasn't gay, but he insisted on it. Even saying that both of them had had an affair.”

Michael shifted to adjust himself on the chair. “He can't be serious. Your brother is married, with children, surely he wouldn't do that.”

  “I hope not.”

“Hope? Surely, you can't possibly be thinking that Drew is telling the truth, can you?”

“I mean, I can't just assume he's telling the truth or not. I want to hear what Hank has to say.”

  “No you don't!”

Michael didn't get angry, so it was weird for Brad to see him that way. Brad gave him a confused look.

“What are you saying?” he asked calmly.

; “I'm sorry, babe,” Michael replied. “I didn't mean to shout, but why do you need to question your brother?”

“Do you know what this would mean? It would mean that Hank cheated on his wife. They have two kids together, and he cheated on her!”

“He didn't do that. He wouldn't do that.”

“You've only just met him: you even met Drew first.”

Michael opened his mouth to object, but the words got caught in his throat

“Is there something you want to say to me, Michael?”

The tension in the room rose to palpable heights. Brad felt like Michael was hiding something from him.

“I don't like Drew,” Michael said quietly.

  “I realize that.”

“No, you don't understand. I don't like him here with you: he's bad news. He probably seduced your brother, and he might even be trying to seduce you.”

“You're paranoid. Has anything changed between us since he got here?”

Brad's question made Michael go silent again.

“Come on babe, don't read too much into it. I was just helping out my sister-in-law. If you weren't comfortable with this, you could've just told me from the start.”

“Then how do you explain your brother—I'm telling you—Drew is bad news.”

Brad closed his eyes for a moment. The headache he had long tried to avoid had reared its head again. He couldn't believe how unreasonable Michael was being.

“You know what?” Brad asked. “Let's just put a pin in this till Hank gets home. Then we can hear the entire story. How's that?”

“Fine then. But I'm telling you, this isn't—”

Michael was interrupted by the sound of the front door opening. Both men turned to see Hank walk in slowly. Brad eyed his brother, seeing how much they looked alike. It wasn't surprising that Drew had thought both men were the same person, but, as he watched his brother’s movements, he saw that they couldn't be more different. Now with everything he learned, it seemed like he didn't even know Hank at all.
